The first wave of "AI in Africa" was mostly imported: global tools, English-only chatbots, and a hope that they would magically work in Lagos, Casablanca or Kinshasa. They usually looked good in a demo and then failed as soon as real users brought their language, their accent and their bandwidth constraints.

If you look at how goods move between Lagos and Abidjan, or inside Cairo on a bad traffic day, you quickly understand that logistics in Africa is not just a routing problem. For decades, it's been diesel bikes, paper receipts, a broker "who knows a guy" at the border and a lot of informal credit. Tech, so far, has mostly been a thin layer on top of that: tracking links and marketplaces that don't really touch the underlying cost and risk.

When you spend time on the continent, climate is not a theoretical curve on a chart. It's droughts in the Sahel, dry taps in Cape Town, and factories shutting down because diesel is too expensive. For years, a lot of "Africa + climate" conversation sat around mega-dams, carbon credits and donor pilots. Useful, but far from the daily reality of a farmer in Morocco or a food processor in Kenya who just needs water and power that actually work.

For years, African logistics has been framed as a routing and marketplace problem: match trucks to loads, digitise brokers, add tracking, done. But operators on the ground describe a different reality. This is where bad roads, politics, customs, FX and liquidity all collide. Margins are thin, relationships are deep, and the real leverage sits with whoever can finance the movement of goods, not with whoever can draw the neatest line on a map.

Most healthtech decks still assume hospitals have the budget and capacity to care about "efficiency". They don't. Talk to real operators, and their priorities are blunt: keep the lights on, pay staff, restock medication, etc. In that world, EMRs and slick workflows are not urgent; reducing the diesel bill or stopping revenue leakage is urgent.

In African fintech, the first wave was about building the rails: switching infrastructure, API payment layers, POS networks, mobile wallets; the core plumbing that allowed money to move. MSMEs, meanwhile, received a handful of dashboards and "tools", but if you sit with a typical trader today, their real operating stack is still Instagram, WhatsApp for orders, cash for most transactions, and informal credit from suppliers

Infrastructure-as-a-service is emerging as the defining model of African SaaS -- converting physical infrastructure and regulated processes into predictable, subscription-like services that create stronger moats than traditional workflow software.

A lot of AI narratives in Africa assume full automation will replace scarce teachers, doctors or lawyers. Anyone who works in African markets knows trust does not work like that. In most sectors, the relationship still sits with a human, even if software can do much of the heavy lifting.

For years, most African fintech stories focused on wallets, local payments and neobanks. Useful, but mostly about domestic flows. Meanwhile the SMEs that actually want to trade across Africa have been stuck with paper forms, corridor-specific rules, manual customs documents and expensive FX. Intra-African trade has remained around 15 to 16 percent of total trade, even though AfCFTA has been positioned as a catalyst for regional value chains.

If you look at the first decade of Web3, most of the energy went into trading: tokens, leverage, speculation. Payments were the subplot everyone liked to talk about but rarely used in anger. Traditional rails were "good enough" for most people, stablecoins looked niche, and it was hard to argue convincingly that on-chain payment beat SEPA or card schemes for a human doing a normal transaction.
